Tishomingo Animal Shelter is a rural animal shelter located near Texoma Lake and about an hour north of the Texas border. All animal shelters have many struggles, but rural shelters have more than most.
Due to location and community population, they don’t have as many potential adopters, donations, volunteers, and opportunities. So when country superstar Miranda Lambert moved to Tishomingo from Nashville, she teamed up with Rescue Rebuild and Mars to help make a difference in their small community.
When a small community needs help, rural America comes together and never disappoints. The 115 volunteers that worked over the two days of the project is a prime example. Volunteers from all over the county came to support their local shelter.
The first priority was to build agility equipment for the outside play yard. Giving dogs the ability not only to play and run around but also stimulate their mind is vital to keeping a friendly, adoptable personality. Kennels and gates were starting to develop rust and holes in the chain-link, so they were repaired to keep the dogs safe and
secure. New paint, a new archway façade, signs, and benches were also built—transforming a
somewhat bland-looking shelter into an exciting and fun-looking place to be.
The small community of Tishomingo and Mars came out in droves to help their local animal shelter and all those animals in need. The shelter now has an increase in walk-in traffic which means more and more adoptions!
